By using mine and your vehicles this ride is predominantly downhill, starting
1300ft and descending to sea level. The ride takes about three hours plus stops
and uplift and takes us through a wide variety of scenery and surfaces.
We set off from your cottage at about 10.30/11am leaving one vehicle at Lynmouth and drive to highest ground above Porlock.
After a short dirt track, we use lanes for the first two miles before going off-road on to open moorland. This is bumpy and can be boggy, can you make it without putting your foot down?
There then follows some undefined bumpy, rocky downhill with a splash through
a small stream, then up and a very steep and technical drop to Badgworthy Water
and perhaps lunch. Can anyone ride across this river?
We then follow the valley, the “Doone Valley” along a single track smooth and rocky, then very wide track meandering through the trees to the hamlet of Malmsmead. Here there is a tea room/garden, loos, an old bridge with - a ford beside it!!
We coast down country lanes through Brendon and Rockford, push up a short steep hill before leaving on to a bridleway through lovely woodland to the famous “Watersmeet”.Refreshments, loos, ..more cake?
After a steep but short push uphill we have a fast blast down the A39 to sea level at Lynmouth at probably around 4pm. From here we use the other car to retrieve the first one.
This ride is open to all guests at Prime Spot Cottages - Bosun’s Cottage, Royal Castle Lodge, Water’s Edge Cottage. Please mention your possible interest at time of enquiry or booking.

This is not a commercial excursion and there is no charge - you are just invited to share an enjoyable experience and see more of Exmoor. I am not a qualified guide, mechanic or first aider and participation is entirely at your own risk. You need some experience of mountain biking and suspension is a must. Obviously, walk anything you don’t like the look of and some sections are unrideable anyway. This does not form part of any contract for the hire of a holiday cottage and the ride is subject to weather and any commitments I may have. Professionally led rides are run occasionally by ‘Exmoor adventures.co.uk’ We can suggest other types of riding for you - quiet on-road, level off-road, green, blue, red and black run trails, north-shore and freestyle.
